今度はSFものと聞いていたので、その辺の難しい単語が読みこなせるか心配でしたが、思ったほど気にはなりませんでした。映画などでSFものを見たことがある方なら、なんとなくイメージがつきます。作品的には、完成度は高いと思います。

でもやはり、最後がなんとなくすっきりしない感じですね。

Twilightの雰囲気を味わいたいかたなら、ほかのゴシックロマンス作品を選んだ方がよいかなあ・・・と、思います。

「トワイライト」の作者、Stephenie Meyerが、「トワイライト」シリーズ以外に唯一発表している長編SF小説。619ページというかなりボリュームのある本で、どっしりと重いです…。

物語は、「寄生動物」であるWandereが自分の「宿主」(host)になるメラニーに「挿入」されるところから始まる。物語は、この寄生動物の一人称ですすむ。やがてWandereはメラニーの「抵抗」を感じるようになり…。

最初は、「トワイライト」とはまったく違う感じの作品だと思っていたけれど、読み進んでいくと、トワイライトとの共通点がどんどん浮かび上がってくる。でも、それが気に障るというわけではなく、物語にどんどんのめりこんでいって、読むのがやめられなくなってしまう。設定としては、かなりありがちだとは思うが。

根底のメッセージとしては、「人間って、素晴らしい」というところかな。傷つけあったり殺しあったり環境を破壊したり、いろいろとバカなこともしてしまうけれど、でも愛し合ったり、お互いを思いやる心があったり、楽しかったり……素晴らしい生き物」。そんな複雑な人間の心を、Wandereが少しずつ理解していく過程が巧く描かれてます。そして、自己中心的な人間とは対極的なまでに利他的なWandereがとった究極の利他行為とは……。

物語はあちこちに山場があって、美味しいロマンスもあり、イイ男もでてきて、「女の子をイケメン2人が取り合う」というお決まりパターン、それに「禁じられた恋」も加わるベタな要素が満載だが、それでもドキドキして読めてしまうのがStephenie Meyerの魔法かも。ただ、盛り上がる割には、ラストがイマイチ納得いかないのも、この作者にして通例パターン。

I was just done reading this book and it just blow me away.I really thought it would bore me coz it's my first time reading science fiction and i'm really not a fan of it and of course the mixed reviews i've read so far..But well I'm not disappointed.It was an interesting story and I'm not expecting romance at all but I was thrilled when it happened.I fell sad at the same time.I pitied the characters,especially "wanda".I mean she's not bad at all and she's very "human" and her own way.Stephenie Meyer just did it again.I'm really looking forward to her future books and I'm so excited about it.i loved her twilight series and then again i'm hooked with "the host".You really should grab one for yourself.:)

This book is very interesting even to readers who have read every book from twilight saga.i would highly recommend buying this book. It is really engaging just like twilight, new moon, eclipse and breaking dawn

他の惑星からの知的生命体が地球をひそかに侵略していた。
銀色のムカデに似たこの寄生体は、人間の脳に寄生して意識を征服する。瞳孔が光る以外は外観がまったく変わらず、しかも宿主（Host）の過去の記憶にアクセスできる異星人たちは、静かに人々と入れ替わっていたのだ。手遅れになるまで侵略に気づかずマイノリティになってしまった人類だが、地球を取り戻すために地下にもぐって抵抗を続けた者たちがいた。そのひとりMelanieは、ついに侵略者に捕まり、「Wanderer」と呼ばれるSoulのHostになった。しかし、強い意志を持つMelanieは、簡単に自分の身体を明けわたそうとはせず、Wandererを悩ませる。Melanieの記憶に残るJaredに強く惹かれ始めたWandererは、消えることを拒否するMelanieの意識とともにアリゾナの砂漠をさまよい、ついにJared、Melanieの弟、叔父たちの隠れ家を探しだす。

Melanieを愛していた者たちは、Wandererとして再会したMelanieを敵として殺害するべきか、それともまだ意識の底に残っているMelanieとして受け入れるべきか悩む。しだいにほとんどの者が心優しいWandererをWandaとして受け入れ始めたが、Jaredだけは彼女を憎み傷つける。
人間に同情を覚え愛しはじめたWandererは、自分の選択を悩む。

SFとして面白くなりそうな設定はあるのだが、ストーリーはしだいに「ひとつの体にふたつの心を持つWanderer／Melanieの三角関係（四角関係）」が中心になり、SFファンにとっては歯がゆい思いがしないでもない。SFにあまり馴染みがないロマンスファンの女性にとっては、SFの世界に触れる機会になるかもしれない。
Twilightのほうが作品の完成度は高いが、異星人の設定、その過去などはTwilightよりもよく考察されていて、こちらのほうが面白いと思う人もいるだろう。
欠陥はあるものの、エンターテイメント性が高く、はらはらどきどきしながら最後まで一気に読みきれる本である。
